Facebook testing a ‘meme hub’ called LOL in attempt to attract teens

Facebook wants teens to think it’s cool again. 

The social media giant is building a new section of its website dedicated to memes, called ‘LOL,’ in a bid to attract younger users, according to TechCrunch. 

The feed will be populated with bite-size clips and GIFs of popular internet memes that are pulled from popular Pages on Facebook. 

‘LOL’ is currently being tested with about 100 high school students who signed on to do the trial with their parents’ permission, TechCrunch noted. 

A series of leaked screenshots of the feed show what kinds of content might appear there.

One image shows a ‘For You’ tab with content curated around users’ interests. 

Another screenshot shows that users can filter content based on specific topics, like ‘Savage,’ ‘Fails,’ ‘Pranks,’ ‘Animals’ and ‘Gaming,’ among others. 

When users click on a video, it will go into theater mode, where the clip takes up almost the entire screen. 

Users can fast forward through different sections of the video by tapping on the screen, similar to how you can advance through someone’s Instagram Stories. 

At the end of a video, users can rate the content they watched by clicking on one of the buttons at the bottom of the screen: ‘Funny,’ ‘Alright’ and ‘Not Funny,’ according to TechCrunch.
