Novak Djokovic sets up second round clash Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the Australian Open after straight sets victory over Mitchell Krueger

Novak Djokovic is up and running at the Australian Open, beating qualifier Mitchell Krueger of the United States in straight sets.

The world No 1 advanced into round two with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory that took a little over two hours on the Rod Laver Arena.

The top ranked seed will play Jo-Wilfried Tsonga next in an eye-catching encounter – a repeat of the 2008 final.

Djokovic is going for a record seventh Australian Open title and his 15th Grand Slam singles championship.

He received the luck of the draw ahead of the tournament when both his major opponents, No 2 Rafael Nadal and third-seeded and defending champion Roger Federer were drawn in the opposite half.

It means the highest-ranked opponent in Djokovic’s route to the final is No 4 Alexander Zverev, who also won Tuesday.
