Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci has revealed he turned down the chance to join Real Madrid last summer.

The Italy international chose instead to rejoin Juventus just a year after leaving the club for Serie A rivals AC Milan.

He reportedly took a wage cut to return to the Old Lady, and it now transpires that he also rejected the advances of the European champions.

Asked if it was true that he rejected Real Madrid, Bonucci told Spanish newspaper AS: ‘Yes, it is: Real Madrid looked at me and it was a source of pride and a pleasure to be an objective for them.

‘It means that I’ve worked well over the years. The call of Juventus, however, and the desire to get back to feeling at home took my heart and let me decide that the Bianconeri were better for me.’

Juventus are 13 points clear at the top of Serie A and are on course to win their eighth straight title, but Massimiliano Allegri’s side have their sights set on a more lucrative prize.
