Aquaman has made $1.1billion worldwide since it came out last December.

And Warner Bros. is now planning a horror-tinged spin-off of the comic book film centered on the Trench, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story will be set in the kingdom of the Trench, but will not feature any of the main cast of Aquaman, including Jason Momoa and Amber Heard.

The Trench creatures are a relatively new addition to the DC Comics world, having only been introduced in the comics in 2011.

They are part of the kingdom of Atlantis but when it sunk, inhabitants who were cut off from other survivors evolved into ravenous monsters.

Details about the storyline for the spin-off, which is separate from an inevitable sequel to the original movie, are being kept under wraps.

Newcomer screenwriters Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald have been hired to write the script.

They were assistants at Bad Robot, JJ Abrams’ production company during the filmmaker’s Super 8 period, and they previously wrote the submarine thriller, The Volos.

James Wan, who directed the Momoa-driven Aquaman, will produce the project along with Peter Safran.
